LinkedIn Premium for Fresh Graduates: Should You Pay Yet?
A decision guide for new graduates: what to build on the free account first, when Premium Career becomes useful, and how long to keep it.

Should Fresh Graduates Pay for LinkedIn Premium?
LinkedIn Premium for fresh graduates is worth paying for only after your profile is complete and you are applying every week. Until then, the free account does more for you. When you start, choose Premium Career for two or three months, ideally beginning with a free trial.
Should you pay yet? A quick check
| Your situation | Pay now? | Do this instead or next |
|---|---|---|
| Profile has no photo, summary or projects | No | Finish the profile |
| Fewer than 50 connections | No | Connect with classmates, lecturers, alumni |
| Applying occasionally | No | Set job alerts and a weekly routine |
| Applying every week, profile complete | Yes | Career, starting with a trial |
| Freelancing while job hunting | Maybe | Compare Career and Business |
A practical guide, not a rule. Check trial availability on the official plans page.
What Should You Build First for Free?
Build proof. Graduates lack long experience, so recruiters look for evidence of ability and effort. All of it fits on a free profile.
- A clear photo and a headline naming your field and interest.
- An About section with what you studied and what you want.
- Projects, internships, volunteering and competitions.
- Skills matched to the roles you target.
- A few recommendations from lecturers or supervisors.
Then grow your network. Alumni from your university are the most responsive group, and connection requests with a short note are free.
When Does Premium Start to Help?
It starts to help when you have something to show and a steady flow of applications. At that point, three features matter.
- InMail: five credits a month to write to hiring managers or alumni who have not connected.
- Profile viewers: see which recruiters looked, and follow up.
- Job insights: choose roles where you match well.
LinkedIn returns an InMail credit when the recipient accepts, declines or responds within 90 days. A polite, specific message to an alumnus often gets an answer. Full method: Premium for job seekers.
How Should You Use the Free Trial?
Start it on the day you begin serious applications. LinkedIn says trial eligibility depends on several factors, and that canceling a trial blocks another for at least 12 months. So, do not waste it on a quiet month.
Prepare a list of target companies and contacts beforehand. Use the trial weeks intensively, then decide. Dates and rules are in the free trial guide.

See the Premium Business priceWhich Plan Suits a Graduate?
Premium Career suits nearly every graduate. It is the lowest-priced plan and focuses on getting hired. Business is for outreach and company research, which most graduates do not need yet.
See durations on our LinkedIn Premium Career subscription page. For other student routes, read Premium for students.
How Long Should You Keep It?
Keep it for the length of your active search, then cancel. For most graduates that means two to three months. A yearly plan rarely makes sense at this stage.
| Search stage | Action |
|---|---|
| Preparing | Free account |
| First month of applying | Free trial |
| Months two and three | Career, monthly or short fixed term |
| Offer accepted | Cancel. See canceling LinkedIn Premium |
Use remaining InMail credits before canceling, since they are lost afterwards.
What Will Premium Not Change?
It will not replace experience or a tailored application. Employers hire graduates for potential shown through projects, attitude and communication. A badge does not signal any of these.
So, split your time sensibly. Spend most of it on applications, skills and conversations with people in your field. Treat Premium as a small accelerator. For costs, see the LinkedIn Premium price guide.

Is LinkedIn Premium necessary to get a first job?
No. Many graduates are hired through free applications, referrals and university networks. Premium can speed up contact with hiring managers, but a complete profile and consistent effort matter more.
Should I buy Premium before I graduate?
Usually wait until you apply actively, often in your final semester. Earlier, focus on projects, internships and connections. These improve your profile for free and make Premium more effective later.
How do I message alumni without Premium?
Send a connection request with a short note mentioning your shared university and one specific question. Most alumni accept. After connecting, you can message them at no cost.
Can Premium make up for a low grade?
No. It cannot change your record. It can help you reach people and show other strengths, such as projects and skills, which often matter as much as grades for entry-level roles.
Is the yearly plan a good idea for graduates?
Rarely. Your search should end within months, and a full year means paying long after you start work. A trial followed by monthly billing or a short term fits better.
